Sustainable Practices In Your Fitness Club
We’ve all watched the David Attenborough documentaries, and we’ve heard the news stories about how the environment is not doing very well at the moment. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the impact their choices have on the environment, and are looking towards organisations to improve their environmental footprint. With increasing pressure from consumers to become more environmentally friendly, discover how the choices you make in your business can have an impact.
Firstly start by looking at your club and review your processes, identify where you are most wasteful. Remember, small steps are still steps in the right direction.
Eliminate Plastic!
The first simple step you can do is reducing the amount of single use plastics that are used in your organisation. Encourage your members to bring their own water bottles, and have water stations for them to refill around your studio. If you serve drinks, only offer paper straws and reward members for bringing reusable cups, (discounts on coffees!). It is also a great idea to provide recycling bins to encourage sustainable practices.
Use Green Cleaning Products
Many cleaning cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that aren’t good for the environment, which means they surely aren’t good for us to be around. Luckily, there are heaps of start-ups coming through creating environmentally friendly cleaning products! You can also introduce biodegradable wipes for you members to clean their equipment after use. By switching to greener products (and recycling their packaging) you can start to reduce your environmental footprint.
Partner With Sustainable Companies
When purchasing new equipment for your fitness club, keep in mind the manufacturing processes of your suppliers. Looking into exactly how your equipment is produced is also a great way to ensure that you are giving your members quality machines that will last through wear and tear!
Use Efficient Lighting
By switching to energy efficient LED bulbs you use 36% less electricity and can save money!
Water Saving Features
Water conservation is another really important step you can take to reduce your footprint. Ways to do this include installing high efficiency toilets, low flow taps and tap aerators. Also encourage your members to reduce their water use by taking shorter showers and being mindful of their water usage habits.
Be Innovative
Technology is always advancing, now it is possible to use gym equipment that actually returns electricity to the grid! Whilst this can be costly to install to install, technology is always advancing and new innovations are always entering the market. Keep an eye out for more ways you can use technology to reduce your environmental footprint and become a greener studio.
Taking steps to ensure your business is doing what it can to operate more sustainably is not only good for the earth, but gives members piece of mind and can even be a selling point, making you stand out from the crowd.
